FCTRT Members Complete Technical Large Animal Rescue Training in Kentucky
Several members of the Fayette County Technical Rescue Team recently attended a Technical Large Animal Rescue (TLAR) training class in Richmond, Kentucky. The extensive four day course taught team members the most efficient techniques to save oversized animals in catastrophic situations. Sponsored largely by USRider, the course was conducted on the campus at Eastern Kentucky University.
The class was taught by two of the most prominent instructors in the country, Dr. Tomas Gimenez and Dr. Rebecca M. Gimenez who have literally written the book on large animal rescue. The approximate 40 hours of extensive hands on training taught techniques and procedures to assist large animals involved in transportation accidents and other emergencies. In addition, the course covered HAZMAT decontamination of large animals, the use of sedatives and tranquilizers, chemical restraint, rescue ropes and knots, rescue from horse barn fires, mud rescue, helicopter rescue, water rescue, and numerous other situations.

When the Weather Outside is Frightful the FCTRT Completes Cold Water and Ice Rescue Training
The Fayette County Technical Rescue Team recently took advantage of the unusual cold and snowy weather in the mid-south area by completing several Operational Readiness Exercises in Cold Water and Ice Rescue. Many members took turns pulling each other out of the frigid water and ice, training for cold water and ice rescues they hope will never be necessary. When these extreme cold weather events happen, many ponds freeze over and children are out of school, and it is ripe for potential problems with people and animals getting near the cold water and/or walking on too-thin ice.
