Fayette County Technical Rescue Team Completes Busy First Quarter
The Fayette County Technical Rescue Team just completed an extremely busy first quarter of 2012. In the first three months of this year – the Team completed 2 successful deployments, a free certified emergency vehicle operator course for a local fire department, the 3rd annual free CPR class at Nona’s Little Bits of Heaven in Oakland, the extensive SARTECH III wilderness search and rescue certification process for its new members, initial training for some new dive rescue gear, and each of the active members also completed over 100 individual hours of Operational Readiness Exercises and training.
Fayette County Technical Rescue Team Celebrates Second Successful Full Year of Service
The Fayette County Technical Rescue Team recently celebrated the completion of their second full year of service at their annual holiday party. Over two years ago, the Team was created to provide technical rescue capabilities to the citizens of Fayette County and surrounding areas at no additional cost to the taxpayers. The FCTRT strives to deliver a specialized and professional response to any emergency it is called to and the Team is designed to supplement and assist local emergency responders in the discharge of their duties by providing technical rescue services in the pursuit of the protection of life and property. The purpose of the Team is to provide a nucleus of highly trained special rescue personnel to deal with different types of situations that the Team is capable and prepared to respond to and who continually train for these types of unique and unusual situations.
The Fayette County Technical Rescue Team Promotes Technical Rescue in North Mississippi
The Fayette County Technical Rescue Team was once again invited to participate in Southaven Fire Department’s Annual Fire and Life Safety Day in Southaven, Mississippi. The Team was able to interact with not only residents from across the mid-south area but also able to interact with the various emergency response agencies that participated and attended the event.
“Since our Team was founded over two years ago, we have completed numerous activations and deployments all across the mid-south area,” said Commander Kevin Snider. “During the past year, we have spent a tremendous amount of time in Mississippi at both deployments and training events that we provide free of charge to local emergency response agencies,” said Snider.

Over a dozen members of the Fayette County Technical Rescue Team recently attended a three day Farm and Industrial Machinery Rescue Training class in Bolivar, Tennessee. The class was taught by certified instructors from the Tennessee Association of Rescue Squads and was designed to teach emergency responders how to properly manage situations involving machinery entanglements within various settings.
“Tractors and machinery are involved in nearly 50% of farm deaths and disabling injuries”, said Commander Kevin Snider. “Rural responders need to be proficient in managing incidents involving this type of equipment and the TARS class is one of the best around,” said Snider.

Members of the Fayette County Technical Rescue Team Dive Unit recently went underwater to continue their dive rescue training. This time, the Dive Unit was training with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit to practice techniques in underwater victim recovery at Herb Parsons Lake.
Members of the Fayette County Technical Rescue Team Attend School Bus Extrication Class in East Tennessee
Several members of the Fayette County Technical Rescue Team in conjunction with the Rossville Fire Department recently attend a certified school bus rescue and extrication class at the Greeneville Rescue Squad in east Tennessee. The school bus rescue and extrication program sponsored by the Tennessee Association of Rescue Squads is designed to give emergency responders a well rounded education on school bus construction and types of buses. Basic extrication procedures, intermediate procedures, and advanced rescue techniques are taught in a mix of field and classroom exercises covered during the three day program.
FCTRT Board Approves Formation of Dive Unit
Due to the tremendous amount of dive deployments as well as the unique nature of dive operations, the Board of Directors of the Fayette County Technical Rescue Team recently approved a formal Dive Unit comprised of over ten members of the Team. Each member of the Dive Unit will also be cross-trained in all other types of water rescue emergencies. As part of the formation of this Unit, Sgt. Matt Wilson was promoted to Lieutenant and Dive Unit Leader and Member Lindsey Hambrick was promoted to Sergeant and Dive Unit Shore Operations Leader.
North Mississippi Firefighters Complete Vehicle Extrication Course Offered by the Fayette County Technical Rescue Team
The Barton Volunteer Fire Department and five other north Mississippi Fire Departments recently completed a vehicle extrication course offered by the Fayette County Technical Rescue Team. In all, 32 firefighters from six different north Mississippi Fire Departments participated in the free course offered by the Fayette County Technical Rescue Team’s instructors.
Members of the FCTRT Dive Unit Complete Certified Dive Training in Arkansas
Several members of the Fayette County Technical Rescue Team Dive Unit recently completed certified dive rescue training in Bentonville, Arkansas. The dive rescue training was conducted by Dive Rescue International which is one of the premiere dive training organizations in the world and is used by most of the prominent public safety diving agencies in the United States.
The extensive three days of training covered numerous topics such as public safety drowning accidents; selecting, training, and equipping dive teams; scene evaluation; dealing with family, media, and other agencies; search patterns; victim retrieval; vehicle accidents; accident scene evaluation; introduction to specialized equipment; and field exercises.

During a medical emergency while waiting for help to arrive, seconds can seem like minutes and minutes can seem like an eternity. Most untrained bystanders feel helpless but have an overwhelming desire to help in some way – and that is where Operation Lifesaver is designed to help.
Operation Lifesaver is the title given to Fayette County Technical Rescue Team’s Community Outreach Program which is always offered free of charge. The Program is designed to teach and certify the general public and emergency first responders in the proper application of CPR, the use of an AED, and general first aid. FCTRT’s Operation Lifesaver Program recently kicked off its second year of teaching free American Heart Association certified courses during a return visit to Nona’s Little Bits of Heaven daycare in Oakland, Tennessee. This class was the first course that the FCTRT has offered under the new 2010 AHA guidelines and marks the start of a new year and expansion of the Program. The Program was extended to now include AHA approved general and pediatric First Aid classes, bringing the total number of free courses offered by FCTRT to five.
